Prayer and discipline was the motive
Most of us lived in joint families, and it needed an occasion to buy clothes for the entire family. It needed an occasion to eat special food, in which you cannot indulge in everyday. It was a day when we take the opportunity to share goodies etc., with the less fortunate ones we know of and also those who serve us every day assisting and making our life easier for us.. which we must acknowledge. I mean, the Postman, Milkman, Newspaperman, Maid servants, gardeners, drivers and more..
